How To Make A Stretcher

Step 5 : Assembly

PreviousStepAssemblyNext Step

Assemble your components as shown above.

Drill one small hole at each joint using a 2mm drill and countersink

Screw the frame together then use a large set square or a known square object like a picture frame to square-up the structure. Manipulate the corners to alter the shape of the stretcher until it is square.

Drill a second hole at each joint and screw in place.

The stretcher should look as above and is now ready to apply the beading.

The beading is important as it prevents the painted side of the canvas from making contact with the stretcher frame. This prevents the shadow of the stretcher appearing in the paint.

Tack the beading to the outer edge of the stretcher using the veneer pins and sawing-off to fit as shown above.

I am a contemporary Australian artist. I paint figurative oil paintings (oil on canvas). Themes include fear, lust, death, angels using figures in surreal timeless landscapes. My primary medium is oil on canvas but I also produce figurative drawings. Original figurative oil paintings and drawings are for sale.  Giclee prints of both paintings and drawings are available for sale.    Copyright©2010Artworks by Sue Vesely
